It’s really nice to be revisiting Tamers, it’s still by far my favorite Digimon anime, and this movie is essentially 2 extra episodes with the characters. Unfortunately, it wasn’t really my cup of tea. It centers on Takato and Henry visiting Okinawa for their summer vacation, encountering malicious Digimon during their trip. It’s not a bad premise, but the movie spends way too much time on action sequences; the same issues surrounding the fights from the main show (namely the fact that they’re boring and barely involve any strategy) are also present here, and it feels like the new side characters barely get any time to shine since the villains appear approximately two seconds after the pair get on the island. It’s a shame too because said new characters are pretty interesting. The first one is Takato’s cousin Kai, who acts as somewhat of a foil to him, being far more confident / bold. It’s not the most complex character dynamic, but I really enjoyed it and the scenes where they interacted were among my favorite in the movie. The second side-character is named Minami, and she ties in pretty heavily with the main conflict of the film, which involves an evil Digimon disguising themself as a salesman and spreading a V-pet that contains a virus to computer systems all around the world. The original creator, Minami’s father, was worried that something fishy might be up, so he embedded a vaccine into the original V-pet on Minami’s laptop just in case. Why he didn’t make a copy on a USB drive or CD-R, idk, but it means that she gets kidnapped and Takato / Henry have to rescue her, ultimately defeating the evil Digimon and restoring order. Overall, I really enjoyed being able to see Guilmon and co again, but it felt more like an extended episode than a proper movie, and the new characters and location were severely neglected in favor of dull action. I don’t regret watching it, but I didn’t find it anything too special.
